Alice is bored with her sister who reads a book ("without pictures or conversation") while she does nothing. "And what is the use of a book without pictures or conversation?" Alice wonders. But now a white rabbit wearing a waistcoat with a pocket watch is running near her. It does not surprise her in the least. Yet when she sees him taking a watch out of his pocket and exclaiming, "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!" She tells herself that decidedly this rabbit is something special. Entering behind him in his burrow, she makes an almost interminable fall that takes her to a world at odds with hers.
